Shaynna Blaze: Country Home Rescue

When interior designer and TV personality Shaynna Blaze took on the renovation of Sutherland House, a 130-year-old country home, she chose Wynstan for the window furnishings throughout. Across five episodes of Country Home Rescue, viewers followed Shaynna as she transformed the property into a forever home for her family. Here’s a look at what she chose, room by room, and the thinking behind each decision.

Episode 2: Carly's Bedroom and Olive's Room

Shaynna began with the upstairs spaces: a bedroom for her daughter Carly, a kids’ room for granddaughter Olive, plus the main bathroom, laundry, staircase, and powder room.

Carly’s room was designed around the tension between the home’s period detail and Carly’s own 70s aesthetic, earthy tones, florals, and Portuguese ceramics. The window at the front of the room looks directly onto the Kyneton Botanic Gardens. Shaynna chose Wynstan’s Australis plantation shutters for this window. The shutters sit flush with the window frame and don’t compete with the view, in a room built around natural textures and a connection to the outdoors, that restraint was the right call.

For Olive’s room, Basswood shaped plantation shutters were used. The brief was dual-purpose: a space that functions for a child without feeling overtly cutesy. The shutters gave the room a clean, considered finish that holds up as the room grows with its occupant.

Episode 3: Kitchen, Dining and Living Room

Episode 3 tackled the largest rooms in the house, the kitchen, dining room, and living room.

In the kitchen and dining area, Wynstan roller blinds in M Screen – Silver Frost were installed. M Screen fabric is a mesh weave that reduces glare and heat while keeping the view open, practical in a working kitchen where you want light control without losing the outlook.

The living room featured a bay window at the front of the building, a period detail Shaynna wanted to honour rather than cover. A Wynstan curved curtain track with sheer curtains in Southport Merino was used here. Shaynna described wanting the bay window to “provide connection with the period detail at the front of the building” while keeping the room feeling open. A curved track follows the line of the bay precisely, and a sheer fabric lets light through while softening the window from the street.

The living room also has a five-metre ceiling, the curtains and the curved track help draw the eye up and reinforce the scale of the space.

Episode 4: Shaynna's Bedroom and Ensuite

Episode 4 was Shaynna’s most personal space: her own bedroom and ensuite.

For the bedroom, she chose Wynstan’s Basswood plantation shutters paired with curtains in Odin Natural. The Odin fabric is a woven blockout that sits in the warm, earthy end of the palette, consistent with the tonal approach Shaynna used across the house. The shutters give her control over light and privacy in a room that needed to function as a genuine retreat.

The ensuite used curtains in Odin White, a cleaner, brighter version of the same fabric family, appropriate for a wet area where you want softness without heaviness.

Episode 5: The Exterior, Parlour, and Ballroom

The final episode covered the exterior transformation and two of the home’s most dramatic interior spaces.

Sutherland House’s exterior was extended with a raised balcony roof and a bell tower, while maintaining the character of a home that had always been there. The barley-twist window details were kept and referenced throughout. On the inside, the parlour, a Marie Antoinette-inspired space with hidden doors, a concealed kitchenette, and a serving hatch that connects through to the ballroom, received Wynstan’s Australis plantation shutters.

The ballroom, designed with entertainment at heart and drawing on the intrigue of the 1920s, completed the transformation.

The Australis shutters in the parlour suited the brief: a room with theatrical details and period reference needs window furnishings that hold their own without becoming the story. Plantation shutters do that, they read as architectural rather than decorative, which lets the room’s other elements take centre stage.

The products across Country Home Rescue

Across five episodes, Shaynna chose Wynstan plantation shutters (Australis and Basswood), roller blinds in M Screen – Silver Frost, sheer curtains in Southport Merino, blockout curtains in Odin Natural and Odin White, and a curved curtain track for the period bay window. Every product was custom-made and professionally installed.

What Sutherland House shows is that window furnishings are rarely one decision — they’re made room by room, with a different brief in each space. What works in a kitchen faces north. What works in a child’s room grows with the child. What works in a designer’s own bedroom is personal.
