How to Clean and Maintain Plantation Shutters and Make Them Last

Wynstan Plantation Shutters

One of the most practical reasons to choose plantation shutters over a fabric blind or a Venetian is how easy they are to keep clean. One swipe per blade. No cords to navigate around, no strings to catch, no fabric to take down and wash. For busy households, pet owners, and anyone who suffers from dust allergies, that simplicity is a genuine day-to-day advantage.

The good news is that keeping plantation shutters clean and well-maintained isn’t a big job, as long as you’re doing the right things. Here’s what that looks like.

Routine cleaning, the everyday approach

For regular dusting, a soft dry microfibre cloth is all you need. Tilt the blades in one direction, wipe along each one from top to bottom, then tilt the other way and wipe the other side. On a standard window it takes a couple of minutes. Do it regularly and dust never gets a chance to build up.

For anything beyond light dust, fingerprints, marks, general grime, a lightly damp cloth handles most situations. The key word is lightly. Wring it out well so it’s barely damp, not wet. Wipe along the length of the blade rather than across it, wiping across puts lateral stress on the blade pins, which you want to avoid over time.

For timber shutters especially, don’t saturate the surface. The paint used on plantation shutters is durable polyurethane, it’s built to last, but it isn’t designed to be soaked. A damp cloth is fine. A wrung-out sponge or a stream of water is not.

What to avoid

Remove your rings before cleaning. This is the one that catches people out. A ring catching on the edge of a blade leaves scratches and black marks that are difficult to remove. It takes two seconds to slip off before you start and saves a lot of frustration.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals. They’ll damage the paint finish over time. Mild soapy water or a lightly damp cloth is all that’s needed for the vast majority of cleaning tasks.

Don’t soak timber shutters. PVC shutters in wet areas can handle more moisture, that’s part of why they’re recommended for bathrooms and laundries, but even PVC benefits from the gentle approach. For more on which shutter material suits which room, read our plantation shutter materials guide.

Dealing with stubborn marks

For surface marks that a damp cloth won’t shift, a magic eraser works well on painted blades. Use it gently, it’s mildly abrasive and you don’t need much pressure. It’s particularly good for scuff marks and the kind of grime that builds up on shutters in high-traffic areas.

For minor chips and scratches in the paint, touch-up paint is included with every Wynstan shutter installation. It’s matched to your shutter colour and is worth keeping somewhere accessible, a small chip touched up early stays small.

How to operate them properly, it makes more difference than you'd think

Wynstan product expert Kathy Wang makes this point consistently: use two hands when tilting the blades. It sounds like a small thing, but it matters over time.

The blade pins, the small plastic fittings that hold each blade in position, can become brittle with age and heat. Applying force to a single point on the tilt bar puts stress on those pins unevenly. Two hands spread across the panel distributes the load and significantly reduces wear. It’s the kind of operating habit that adds years to a shutter’s working life without any extra effort.

The annual maintenance check

Once a year, add it to the smoke alarm reminder if it helps, check the tilt-bar screws at the back of each panel. With regular use, these can loosen gradually. A quick nip-up with a screwdriver takes two minutes per panel and keeps the tilt mechanism working smoothly and evenly.

Kathy Wang flags this as one of the most overlooked maintenance steps. Most customers never do it. Those who do notice the difference in how cleanly and evenly the blades tilt over time. It’s two minutes a year for a product that should last fifteen or more.

The bottom line on maintenance

Plantation shutters are among the lowest-maintenance window coverings available, and if you want to see how that compares to cleaning other blind types, our how to clean blinds guide covers roller blinds, venetians, honeycomb shades, and Roman blinds side by side.

Do those things consistently and a well-made plantation shutter will look and work like new for a very long time. That’s part of what makes them worth choosing in the first place.
