Tiny home, big mess. When Maria downsized to a tiny home in daughter Josie’s backyard, she brought all her clutter with her.

Maria and Josie’s story
This family’s story is one for the modern age. At the age of 74, Maria’s bad knee meant she couldn’t live alone any more. Daughter Josie and her three children, Dante, Sienna and Romeo, offered to help.
“I love my mum very much and we didn’t want to put her in a nursing home, so we decided she could live with us and we could all be one big family,” explains Josie.
Josie installed a tiny home in her backyard and Maria moved in, but that’s when the trouble began. Maria forgot to read the small print about downsizing and brought way too much stuff with her, overwhelming Josie’s back room with clutter and filling the tiny home with so many possessions that it became quite dangerous.
The project
Enter the Space Invaders experts – clutter guru Peter Walsh, reno queen Cherie Barber and treasure hunter Lucas Callaghan.
While Peter takes the family to sort through their junk, Cherie tackles the renovation, aiming to turn the back room into a multi-function space that will act as a bridge between Josie’s home and her mum’s area out the back.
In the back room, she creates three zones – for sewing, music and relaxation. The heavy and dark old curtains are removed, replaced by light and elegant Veri Shades from Wynstan to give Maria control of sunlight in her new sewing area.
The tiny home is also given a facelift by Cherie, with new paint, new kitchen bench top and modern splashback to introduce much-needed colour into the space.
The final result
And what a transformation! In the back room, the new Veri Shades allow soft and diffused light to pour in through the large bay windows.
“Your new sewing spot now has beautiful natural light through the windows, so you can see what you are doing,” says Cherie to Maria.
Josie is overwhelmed with the changes. “Oh my gosh, this is remarkable,” she says, looking around. “There will be a lot of love in this room and less chaos. It’s just perfectly blended together. This is just a room that is just going to be so enjoyable.”
When Maria sees her renovated tiny home, now lighter, brighter and less cluttered, she can’t believe her eyes. The old-fashioned lace curtains have been replaced with more Veri Shades for a softer, contemporary aesthetic and to provide airflow.
